The feel-good goes both ways!
Hey, it’s Stephanie. I’m writing this on a day where I’m wearing slip-on sneakers, jean shorts, and a plain blue shirt. I’m still carrying the clear “event purse” from the Dave Matthews Band concert a few weeks ago.
In the ONE HOUR it took for my annual mammogram (ladies – have you had your squeeze lately?), the following happened:
- A check-in clerk complimented my earrings.
- My clinician couldn’t decide if she liked my earrings or sneakers better.
- The gift shop clerk loved my purse.
Why am I telling you this? Each of these people made my day:
- I made eye contact with them and had a brief conversation.
- They will remember my positive reaction to their compliment and know they made someone else’s day better.
- I will remember their compliments every time I wear those items.
When I pay someone a compliment, it makes me feel just as good as the recipient. The feel-good moment goes both ways. My challenge for you this week is to find someone every day to surprise with an honest compliment.
- Tell a stranger their hat/dress/shoes look great on them, or their skin is radiant, or they bring a presence – whether it’s powerful or peaceful.
- When a coworker handles a difficult or complex situation well, tell them.
Now – imagine the person doing the complimenting is your State Legislator or City Councilor? What will the recipient remember when seeing your name on the ballot?
Happy serving!
