When it’s filled with neighborly love!
We were (looks at watch) today-years-old when we learned about Community Fridges.
You’ve seen adorable Little Free Libraries & Pantries and probably a decorated rain barrel or two. But what about a funkified fridge?
Shout out to Brooke Kauchak, Wichita Community Services Representative District 4, for this week’s Serve60Sharp idea.
The Concept
Food pantries are gearing up for the winter and a group in Wichita, KS is cooling things down by plugging in community refrigerators in public places. Time Magazine reported on the ICT Fridge Community Fridge Project and similar programs in Germany (where it started), Tulsa, OK, Miami, FL, and Memphis, TN.
Google to find your local community fridge – where it is located, who oversees the supplies and funding, and how you can make an impact by donating your time (grocery shopping), money, and your support! Here are some guidelines to get you started (what most fridges need/don’t).
Action Step
Find a community refrigerator between your grocery store and home or work. During your regular grocery shopping, grab an extra of refrigerated items and drop them off. Cold items giving a warm hug to needy neighbors!
Is this a need in your community? Click one of the program links above to learn best practices, tips, and tools! Thanks again, Brooke Kauchak in Wichita!
Happy serving,
