I’ve often joked about my “Methodist Guilt”: Years of CROP Walks, canned food drives, and mission trips make me think twice about:
- That extra scalding minute with the showerhead on high,
- The leftovers when you’re leaving town and know they won’t be eaten, and
- Spending money on pretties like annuals when that money could go to more fruitful causes…
As I was on the way to another lunch meeting this week at a local restaurant, listening to the news about:
- Job cuts
- Medicaid cuts
- The federal shutdown
- Now with employees NOT getting paychecks and yet still expected to show up to work, and finally,
- Food aid ending – and now just delayed, for 1.2M veterans AND active duty military, as well as 186K Kansans…
Read that again. I’ll wait.
Methodist Guilt – ACTIVATED. But what can I do NOW?
As I’m sitting at a white tablecloth meal with enough to feed two others, and for which the cost would feed two times two, I thought of the BOGO concept: Buy One Get One and its alternative, Buy One GIVE One.
- For every meal you eat out, when you’re paying the tab, grab your phone and donate the same amount to a local food pantry.
- I’m obviously a fan of my church’s hunger missions because they coordinate with 21 other hunger programs to fund where there is need, not just where we are. Here’s some data on our Hunger Mission work:

I normally say “Happy serving” but this week feels more like “Happy eating” – for you and others,
