Grocery Giveback

Be kind, rewind the payback

Your VoteSharp Team is safe and sound. It was a spectacular day in Kansas City, 60° and sunny with clear blue skies. We watched the event from a local hangout and loved the community-building atmosphere – we cheered, sang, and clapped to the live coverage. Travis Kelce and Chris Jones made fools of themselves and we figured that’s what would be remembered.

Until shots were fired just minutes after the event ended. Players were still on the stage. Confetti was still flying. Everyone here knew someone at the parade and the shooting could have happened anywhere along the route or rally – it’s ALL close to home. A local mom was killed, and her kids injured. Between 11 kids at Children’s Mercy Hospital, NINE had gunshot wounds. Total of 23 injured, aged 6-47. More than half were kids.

Kansas City now joins the least-wanted list of mass shootings at large gatherings. It’s sickening and enraging. We don’t yet know about the shooter(s), but no matter the case, universal background checks are a pretty basic place to start.

Our Grocery Giveback is closely related to the “Starbuck’s Pay It Backward” or the “Community Stalker” concepts, and works in any retail business.

Buy a couple of $5 gift cards at the grocery store. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Give one back to the checker to deduct from a customer who might need it.
  2. Hand one to the person behind you and wish them a good day.
  3. Drop one at the receptionist desk at your next appointment.
  4. The crossing guard near school is always waving their hands – put a card in one!
  5. That person who seems to just hate their job? Hand one off with a smile.

We never know what’s going on in someone’s life. Imagine a mom whose kids are rattled by the shooting and she’s wondering if good even still exists. She’s checking out with tonight’s dinner and looks up to see your hand. While $5 may seem small, the tiniest kindness could restore another’s faith in humanity. We can all use a little of that these days.

Happy serving,
